The Tina Turner story

Hi Dennis,

I saw your tix for the 72 Ike and Tina show at the Cherry Hill Arena.Never thought I would see one of those ! Crowd was very small.Besides being a very weak bill for the size venue, there was a WAR show in Camden same night. I had gotten to know the promoter { names escapes me} but he had ties to Capricorn Records. I was trying to sell him on a band I was promoting..Chalice.He gave us tix,and after the show imploded we joined him in his Cherry Hill Inn room.  The story was that Ike and Tina could see by the crowd that they weren't getting paid,so they refused to even leave their bus.Meanwhile, after a mediocre set by the Knock-out's {Joe Frazier's band ?} ,Chuck was paid enough to hit the stage. The Knock-outs-as I remember- backed him up.It was a suicide mission. The band knew the songs, but Chuck screwed them all up w/ stops and starts.I recall a horrid over-long version of My ding-a-Ling....  The show ended abruptly after Chuck, which surprised the small crowd, which was pretty pissed.  We made it to the Cherry Hill Inn,nervous because we heard rumors along the way the Cherry Hill Det's were looking for him behind crowd charges of fraud .We were playing the promoter the band's music when all of a sudden there was excited loud knocking at the door.It was Ike,and he was pissed ! Having read enough stories of Ike's propensity for violence,we ran out the door as he was forcing his way in.  That was the last we saw or spoke to the promoter........  Rich Rollison - Brooklyn,NY
